Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Welcome! I've gathered answers to the most common questions about my work, art practice and how to collect art from Artipodean. If you have a question that isn't covered, please don't hesitate to reach out through my contact page.
1 What inspires your artwork featured in Artipodean?
I'm drawn to topics that carry weight such as histories that have been silenced or forgotten, health crises like the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the breakdown of systems we depend on, and the hidden and mystical aspects of human experience. To me, colour is a language and a conversation. Art can make visible what often remains unseen, and that even small-scale works can carry profound meaning.
Living in Sydney, Australia, also influences my perspective as an artist. Geographically distant from traditional art centers offers me a unique vantage point on global issues and human experiences. The name 'Artipodean' itself reflects this position: creating art from the other side of the world, offering a different lens on universal themes.
2 What painting techniques do you use?
I paint with gouache (pronounced 'gwash'), which is an opaque water-based paint that sits between watercolour and acrylic. Unlike transparent watercolours, gouache provides solid colour coverage with a distinctive chalky, matte finish that's been valued by artists for centuries.
I work exclusively with Holbein Acryla Gouache. There's something incredibly satisfying about the velvety feel of the paint as it goes onto the paper, and then the way the colours dry to such vivid, luminous intensity.
I start by drawing the composition with a 0.8 black Pentel Energel pen on A5 Khadi handmade cotton rag paper. This foundation gives me the precision I need before building up layers of colour. My background trade as a calligrapher taught me to work with meticulous attention to detail on a small scale, and gouache is the perfect medium for that kind of disciplined, precise work. The flat, velvety finish means the colour dries with a vivid chromatic intensity without gloss or sheen.
Working in miniature with gouache on handmade paper demands a focused, concentrated attention. The combination of precise pen work, vivid gouache, and the beautiful texture of Khadi paper results in something that feels both contemporary and connected to historical traditions of small-scale, detailed painting.
3 What themes do you explore?
My collections explore the hidden narratives and complex realities that shape our world, focused on social, political, and intersecting themes such as relationships, disability, gender, HIV, chronic health, and death and ageing.
Some collections take a deep dive into a specific subject. For example, the "Virologic Assault" collection was created for 2025 World AIDS Day and examines the ongoing reality of living with HIV. "Legacy of Silence" explores my relationship with my father, and what remains unspoken in our history, while "Invoking Belial" delves into more mystical territory.
Using abstraction and colour, my goal is to create work that invites reflection on these themes without being heavy-handed or didactic. The miniature format allows for intimate, contemplative viewing, which mirrors the attention these topics deserve.
4 Can I view your art in person or at exhibitions?
Currently, all of my work is exclusively in digital format as NFTs, so there aren't any physical pieces ready to view in a gallery setting at this time.
I'm very open to exploring exhibition opportunities for the physical artwork in the future, whether solo shows or group exhibitions. The right exhibition context could provide a meaningful way to engage with the work beyond the digital realm.
If you're a curator, gallery owner, or fellow artist interested in discussing potential collaborations or exhibition opportunities, I'd love to hear from you. Please reach out through my contact page.
In the meantime, all of my collections can be viewed in high-quality on my Foundation page, where you can view the narratives and themes behind each work in more detail.
5 How can I purchase your artwork?
Currently, all of my artwork is available exclusively as NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and can be purchased using cryptocurrency from https://foundation.app/@artipodean
If you're new to NFTs, think of them as digital certificates of ownership and authenticity stored on the blockchain (a secure, public digital ledger). When you purchase an NFT, you're buying a unique digital asset that can't be duplicated. For a beginner-friendly explanation of how NFTs work, this article from Kraken is pretty good: "What is an NFT? | Non-Fungible Tokens Explained"
It's important to understand that owning an NFT doesn't necessarily grant copyright or intellectual property rights over the associated digital file. The artwork image itself may still be viewable by others online, but you own the authentic, original token, the 'real' piece in the digital world.
To purchase my NFTs:
1. Visit my Foundation page at https://foundation.app/@artipodean
2. Browse the collections
3. Click the "Make Offer" button on any piece you're interested in
4. You'll need a cryptocurrency wallet and some cryptocurrency (typically Ethereum) to complete the transaction.
6 What is the price range for your artwork?
My NFT artwork is available through an offer-based system on Foundation, which means pricing is flexible and responsive to collector interest rather than chasing market trends or maximising sales. The offer system means you can propose a price you feel is fair for a piece you're interested in. I review all offers seriously.
I create art because I enjoy exploring these themes artistically. Whether a piece finds a collector is something of a happy accident rather than the driving force behind the work.
To make an offer, visit my Foundation page, browse the collections, and click "Make Offer" on any piece. You'll need a cryptocurrency wallet with Ethereum (ETH) to participate. Keeping in mind that cryptocurrency values fluctuate, pieces from my collections range generally from 0.0041 ETH to 0.0182 ETH (approximately $17 to $80 AUD at current exchange rates).
If you have questions, I'm always happy to discuss the work and what drew you to it.
7 How do I display/store NFT art?
One of the unique aspects of owning NFT art is that you have multiple options for how to experience and display the work.
-
Digital frames: High-quality digital art frames (like, Netgear Canvas, Meural or Samsung Frame TV) allow you to display your NFT artwork in your home or office.
-
Screens and monitors: You can display your NFT on tablets, computer monitors, or TVs
-
Virtual galleries: Some platforms allow you to create virtual gallery spaces to showcase your NFT collection online
-
Social media: Many collectors share their NFT art on social platforms, though remember this doesn't transfer ownership.
The NFT itself is stored on the blockchain and in your cryptocurrency wallet. The actual image file associated with the NFT can typically be downloaded in high resolution from the platform where you purchased it (in this case, Foundation).
I recommend keeping your cryptocurrency wallet secure with strong passwords and backup phrases; downloading high-resolution files of your NFT for personal display use; and storing backup copies of image files in multiple locations (cloud storage, external drives).
The blockchain permanently records your ownership and the artwork's provenance, which is one of the key benefits of NFTs. This information is always accessible and verifiable, regardless of how you choose to display the artwork.
8 Can I contact you for collaborations or
media inquiries?
I'm always interested in meaningful collaborations, exhibition opportunities, and media inquiries that align with my artistic practice and themes.
You can reach me directly through the contact form on this website, or email me at artipodean@gmail.com. Please include details about your project, publication, or proposal (incl any deadlines) so I can respond thoughtfully.
I'm particularly interested in:
-
Curatorial projects or group exhibitions exploring social, political, disability, LGBTQ+ or health-related themes
-
Collaborations with other artists working in abstract or miniature formats
-
Media features discussing art exploring themes as mentioned above, NFTs or outsider-style art.
I aim to respond to all genuine inquiries within the week. If you're interested in purchasing artwork, please visit my Foundation page where you can make offers directly on individual pieces.
